Donnie Unger Seriously Injured at VIR
Donnie Unger, long-time racer and MARRC member, and a former recipient of the Twins Rider of the Year, was seriously injured at VIR during the CCS weekend on October 5-6. Donnie high-sided exiting the uphill Turn 7 (just after the bridge), and the landing caused a compression fracture to one of his vertebrae. Fortunately, that was the only injury in the crash.
According to team manager Ron Peddicord of Duc Pond Racing, Donnie had surgery to repair his L1 vertebrae, located in his lower back. The surgeon then built a titanium cage around his spine for support. He got his custom back brace yesterday and can now sit up. He can move everything but can't control his right leg yet.
Donnie is in good spirits. He is on a solid food diet, and is able to walk, although he can only take about four steps before he has to stop. If all goes well, he will be moved to the Winchester Rehabilitation Hospital next Tuesday or Wednesday. For now, only family members can visit Donnie, but we hope that visits by friends can happen soon.
