MARRC 2003 Season Awards

The Mid-Atlantic Roadracing Club (MARRC) held its 20th annual awards banquet in Tyson’s Corner, VA to recognize its members and Mid-Atlantic racers. Nearly 100 people attended the event, including many Mid-Atlantic racers from WERA, CCS, and Formula USA.

The MARRC annual awards are voted on by the MARRC membership, consisting of cornerworkers, racers, and roadracing enthusiasts. The MARRC Board of Directors, along with past award winners and special guests, presented the awards. Awards are presented based on the votes from MARRC members, with the exception of two special categories--President's Awards, which are decided by the club President, and the Harry E. Morse Cup, which is decided by a consensus of the Board of Directors and racing official Judy Morse.

MARRC's Cornerworker of the Year went to Allen Cox, an example of someone who grew up with racing. Having just turned 18, Allen is beyond his years in judgment, experience, and commitment. His father, a racer, brought him to Summit Point for many years, and Allen found ways to work with MARRC long before he was old enough to cornerwork. He has quickly grown into a good trainer and leader, and an outstanding Cornerworker.

The Hard Luck Award was presented to Fred Seoane, whose promising season ended in a hard crash in Turn 1 at Summit Point. The MARRC Board of Directors used the time to announce that Fred had been selected for a distribution from the MARRC Injured Members Fund (IMF) for his injuries. The MARRC IMF is designed to assist any injured member, cornerworker, racer, or official, who is injured during a sanctioned roadracing event.

The President’s Awards are presented to the unsung heroes of the club, whose work behind the scenes can be taken for granted. All three of this year’s recipients have always gone above and beyond the call of volunteerism, and have taken responsibility and the initiative on projects for the club. In particular is Cornerworker Art Sears, who works miracles on the club’s radio equipment. He is famous for resurrecting dropped radios that everyone thought were beyond repair. His expertise has saved MARRC literally thousands of dollars in radio repair and replacement costs.

The MARRC Cup is awarded to the most dedicated volunteer in the club, and Glen Ouye fits that description perfectly. As a board member, he has worked hard at streamlining the club’s operation, and as the MARRC Safety Crew committee chairperson and an Associate Safety Director, has been the de facto leader of the MARRC Safety Crew. Under his care, the MARRC Safety Crew has experienced steady and healthy growth.

The Harry E. Morse Cup is presented to individuals for a lifetime of work with motorcycle roadracing. This year’s recipient, Leonard A. Bacon, is on his fourth decade of work with motorcycle racing, and has distinguished himself as a cornerworker, photographer, equipment manager, and registrar at racetracks across the country.

Congratulations to the award winners, and to all riders and cornerworkers, for a great season of motorcycle racing!
