2006 Banquet a Blast

On January 21st, about 65 club members gathered in McLean, Virginia, to celebrate our accomplishments from the 2005 season at the MARRC Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet. In extreme contrast to the previous year's banquet, which was blanketed by a blizzard, this year's banquet was blessed with good weather. In fact, it was the first time in memory where the weather was nice enough to ride to the event!

The evening began with the Annual Meeting, which gives club members an overview of our administrative activities. President Wendy Leland called the meeting to order, and Secretary Will Astle announced that as of January we had over 400 members in good standing. Treasurer Dawn Greer stated that we are financially solvent as a corporation. Then the Directors of our 7 operating groups—Benefits, Food Services, Marketing, Membership, Outreach, Safety Services, and Training—spoke about the great work that each of our 21 committees accomplished in 2005, and some of their plans for 2006.

At the close of the Annual Meeting, the 2006 Executive Committee (EC) assumed their seats: members-at-large Will Astle, Rick Beggs, Glen Ouye, Terry Reese, and Simon Whalley, and officers Secretary Sonia Chapin, Treasurer Dawn Greer, Vice President Chris Astle, and President Wendy Leland. At the conclusion of the Annual Meeting, the evening proceeded into everyone's favorite part - dinner!

The highlight of the Banquet is always the presentation of awards, and since MARRC would be nothing without our volunteers, the awards portion begins with recognizing them for their efforts. The 2005 EC members were presented with a carrying case to use for ferrying their paperwork and/or laptops to and from EC meetings. Operating Group Directors and Committee Chairpersons were also recognized with thank-you gifts in recognition of the additional administrative work that comes with their titles. Since many of these people have multiple titles, the Awards Committee gave each person two items to choose from: a high-quality monocular and a traveling case.

Next, earned awards were presented to 44 members who volunteered significant time to the club many different capacities in 2005. Those who earned a Level I award for working between 8 and 12 days were presented with a pair of the ever-popular Mechanix gloves. Level II award recipients, who worked 12.5 days or more, received either a travel bag or the Mechanix gloves, as well as an embroidered lightweight jacket or a fleece jacket.

Each fall we put out a ballot so that MARRC members can vote for fellow members who performed well (or otherwise made an impression) during the racing season. The results are revealed at the Banquet, where we proudly present the winners with plaques and trophies to celebrate their accomplishments. First, the awards in various racer categories were presented. The President's Award followed, which is not voted on by the membership, because it is usually given to someone who deserves recognition for their support of MARRC, but who works behind the scenes so that their efforts are not visible to the majority of our members. The evening's final awards are voted on by our members and recognize volunteers for their hard work and dedication. The Cornerworker of the Year award and the Roadracing School Volunteer of the Year award (new this year) recognize the person whom our members determine to be the hardest working, most talented volunteer from these committees during the previous racing season. The awards ceremony concludes with the MARRC Cup, which is presented to the person whom our members feel has done the most in support of the club's motto, "Dedicated to the Advancement of Motorcycle Roadracing", over the previous year.

The evening concluded with a unique event. Art Diaz, who is a frequent contributor of giveaway items for our Volunteer Incentive Program, brought some souvenirs from his racing career - crashed helmets, some parts recovered from his spectacular Turn 4 crash that earned him the Crash & Burn Award, t-shirts, and photos. A lively crowd participated in a raffle for these items and a few lucky people went home with a unique memento of the evening.

Join us next January for another great Banquet, and don't forget to vote in the fall for your favorite racers and volunteers!
