MARRC

CCS at Summit Point

April 13-14, 1997

Cloudy skies and a lazy rain descended on Summit Point for the first day of motorcycle racing in the 1997 season. Practice was delayed in the morning to let the rain soak into the track. The rain continued, along with the practice sessions and afternoon racing. The rain subsided on Sunday, and allowed the track to dry somewhat, although the racing surface never quite warmed up. Cornerworkers were kept busy displaying caution flags and picking up bikes that had slid into the West Virginia mud.

Caution flags Summit Point in the spring is a slippery place. Here two cornerworkers show the caution flags to warn riders of the conditions.
Cleanup crew MARRC cornerworkers try to sweep water off the track in Turn 7 and load two damaged bikes into Roadrash II. This portion of the track is especially slippery in the rain, and fortunately no riders were injured in testing the lack of traction.
Ride back to the pits MARRC assistant safety director Marc Shockley loads a damaged bike into Roadrash II. Few clubs provide a service to return bikes directly to their pits, free of charge.
Glenn Zsarek Summit Point track record holder Glenn Szarek find a good line through Turn 8. The conditions improved considerably on Sunday and lap times flirted with the low 1:20s. As the weather warms, lap times may lower even more to reflect the improvements made in Turns 3 through 5.
